Photos surrounding the MGS HD Vita launch in Japan

30 Jun

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for the PlayStation Vita released this thursday in Japan, and KP spokesman Tsubuyaki Jiroo posted some photos on his Twitter of promotional material for the game. First of all, a picture showing preparations being made at the Konami Style Store in Tokyo.

There was also a two page advertisement in this week’s Famitsu.

Thirdly, there’s a photo of a stand where you can take a test tour of the game.

Jiroo also posted a photo of the Japanese version of the game.

Here’s a photo of another stand posted by Yuji Korekado.

Konami has released a patch for the PlayStation 3 version of the MGS HD Collection that will allow transfarring with the PS Vita version.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for Vita launches in Europe

29 Jun

It already came out in Japan and the United States, and now it’s Europe’s turn to enjoy the portable version of the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. June 29 is the day European Vita owners can pick up this title. The package includes Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3 and the original 2D games, Metal Gear and Metal Gear: Solid Snake.

There are also some additional control options that make use of the PlayStation Vita’s functions, such as peeking around corners using the touchscreen or item selection using the touch pad on the back of the system. Then there’s trophy support, and the ability to use transfarring between the PlayStation 3 version and this one, meaning you’ll be able to use the same save file at home on your console and on the handheld.

The game came out yesterday in Japan, so now it has been released in all major regions.

Kojima recording a surgery scene

26 Jun

Kojima is back in the recording studio again. Today he appears to be recording a scene that features a medical operation.

Translation: The 1st day’s very difficult and professional scenes. We specially invited doctor from Sendai for overall medical direction.

Kojima didn’t say what this recording is for, but it seems likely it has something to do with Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Last week Kojima mentioned having to do motion capture and voice recording for Rising. Also, at one point in the story Raiden is gravely injured and as a result receives his black armor body. Today’s recordings may very well be for that scene.

Kojima mentions a new character, and shows more motion capture

22 Jun

Kojima posted an interesting tweet today.

Of course, this is rather vague, and it’s unclear what project he is talking about. It could be relating to Project Ogre, MGS5 or something else entirely.

The past few days he was once again busy with motion capture scenes, one of them featuring a car accident.

It remains unclear what exactly Kojima is working on these days, with the development of Metal Gear Rising and Project Ogre and the rumors about Metal Gear Solid 5.

Character and Mission DLC for Metal Gear Rising a Possibility, but no Online Multiplayer

21 Jun

During an interview with the staff of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, the game’s producer Yuji Korekado said there are no plans to add online multiplayer to the game. There are however plans for future downloadable content to be released after the game’s launch. As examples Korekado mentioned new characters (Gray Fox maybe?) and new missions.

Some other small details were mentioned in the interview. The game will know a growth system which gives players the ability to purchase new moves and combos. Also, the character seen in the trailers who looks sort of similar to Vamp isn’t him, but a new character introduced in this game. He plays an important role in the story.

The interview ended on a pretty funny note. When a journalist asked if there were any plans for PlayStation Move and Xbox Kinect support, the producer responded with the question if they would want that. After a brief moment, the  journalist answered with a decisive ‘no’, after which everyone started laughing.

Metal Gear Solid 5 Announced?

20 Jun

Update: It appears that the game hasn’t been confirmed yet after all, Kojima only stated there is a possibility for MGS5 with the Fox Engine. This was mistranslated to a confirmation.

According to an interview held with French gaming magazine IG Magazine, Kojima has confirmed there will be a Metal Gear Solid 5. The game will apparently run on the FOX engine and will once again feature much infiltration and espionage. It will also pick up on the concept introduced in MGS4, where you could convince people to do you a favor (he probably refers to the fact that you could help the rebels and exchange items with them). Kojima also mentioned he likes the idea of social interactions in Deus Ex, but he’s not saying it will necessarily be in MGS5. This probably refers to being able to choose from a dialogue tree and take sides with certain characters.

Lastly, Kojima also implied the game will feature Solid Snake as a protagonist. In response to a question asking how he feels about Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Kojima responded that this was never ‘Metal Gear Solid’, but rather a spin-off that tries to do something new. He also said that despite wanting to kill him in MGS4, the studio is not yet done with Solid Snake.

As fans may remember, a few months ago Kojima Productions was recruiting for new people to help develop ‘the next Metal Gear’, and this could very much be it.

The only strange thing is that the artwork features Big Boss, whereas Kojima is talking about Solid Snake in the interview. The only point in the timeline where the two were together (aside from MGS4) is in the original two games. In any case, at this point it all remains vague and uncertain. Kojima has said that he will reveal a new Fox Engine demo in July, so maybe we’ll learn more on what exactly is keeping him busy these days.

Military Training and Horror Scenes in Kojima's Motion Capture Sessions

20 Jun

Ever since his return from the E3, Kojima has been busy with motion capture sessions and other stuff relating to his current projects. Today he posted an interesting comment about a ‘horror scene’ he has been recording.

Two days ago he mentioned being kept busy by two projects at the same time. Likely he’s talking about Project Ogre and Metal Gear Rising.

Lastly, a tweet from a week ago shows the military training Kojima Productions is accustomed to, which could also be for Project Ogre.

As always it’s a bit vague what exactly Kojima is working on, but we can at least conclude that he’s working on multiple projects simultaneously,  and that the scenes range from military  settings to ‘horror scenes’.

MGS HD Collection for Vita launches today in the US

12 Jun

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for PlayStation Vita releases today (June 12th) in the United States. The game includes Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, as well as several extra modes from the original games. New touchscreen functions have been added, and it features transfarring with the PlayStation 3 version, so that save files can be switched back and forth between the two versions.

Europeans will have to wait for the game a little longer: it releases in the UK on June 29th and in the rest of Europe on June 28th.

Metal Gear Online Servers Closing Today

12 Jun

On the day of the 4th anniversary of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Konami is closing the servers of Metal Gear Online. The separately playable online segment shipped with each copy of the aforementioned game.

Konami announced the closing of the servers earlier this year. In Japan, various events and competitions were held leading up to the finale of the online multiplayer game.

A sequel to Metal Gear Online hasn’t been announced so far, so it’s unclear what the future holds for the multiplayer component for the Metal Gear series.

Project Ogre to be shown next month?

11 Jun

In an interview with Computerandvideogames.com, Hideo Kojima talked a little about the Fox Engine. He explained that the screenshot of the meeting room released earlier (see the picture below) was indeed running on current generation hardware, and that the engine uses tricks to make it look better. Due to those tricks it would also be possible for environments to look like that, even with characters in them and in motion.

The Fox Engine demo: the left side is real, the right side computer graphics.

He also said that the next sample the studio will be showing of the Fox Engine will be more concrete.

One thing that I can say is that Project Ogre is evolving alongside the Fox Engine. The Fox Engine is at the point now where it is pretty much ready to start making a game, so rather than releasing a sample image of, say, our meeting room, what will be the next sample you see from Fox Engine will be something from Project Ogre.

Because it was already confirmed that we would get a new Fox Engine demo on the 25th Anniversary of the Metal Gear series, in July, it’s safe to assume this demonstration is one and the same thing. Meaning, next month Project Ogre will be shown. Funny thing is that Kojima said in that interview it wouldn’t be Project Ogre, but apparently that has changed. In any case, we will find out next month.

Additionally, Kojima noted the engine is about ready for use, and he made clear it’s not just a graphics engine but a powerful toolset that allows the studio to develop games more efficiently.

For the whole (interesting) interview, head to CVG.
